“The house feels so empty. What shall we do next?”
– Asks my younger daughter who has taken to following me around with that lost puppy look, now that her older sister is away on a school trip.
My kids. Can’t live with each other, can’t live without each other.
Me: You should listen to me. I do know more.
Her: Yes amma. I know. Old people are wiser.
– Ouch! I suppose claiming to be young at heart won’t really cut it?
Conversation between my nine year old daughter and her father.
Appa: Make me some tea.
Her: Someday, appa. I’m not saying I’ll make it now, or tomorrow or later. But someday.
Appa: I’ll also send you to college someday. I’m not saying I’ll send you when you are ready to go or the year after. But someday.
Her: I’ll find some way to go to college. And I’ll find some way to become a billionaire. And then I won’t give you my money!
– Poor appa, there goes his retirement plan. He seems to keep getting outwitted again and again and yet again.
Me: I’m glad you had a proper breakfast this morning.
Her: What’s an “improper” breakfast amma?
– And the moral of the story is to beat your kids into submission early on so they don’t pass smart-aleck comments such as these.
